Mount Elgon National Park – Birding Area in Uganda.

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano and one of Uganda’s oldest geological formations, with its first eruption dating back nearly 24 million years. Once the tallest mountain in Africa—towering even higher than today’s Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m)—it has since been shaped and reduced by millions of years of erosion to its current height of 4,321m. Despite this, Mount Elgon remains a natural wonder, ranking as the 4th highest peak in East Africa and the 8th highest on the continent.

Best Birding Spots in Mount Elgon National Park.

Mount Elgon is internationally recognized as a birding hotspot, offering exceptional opportunities for enthusiasts to encounter rare and unique species. One of the best areas to observe these birds is the Kapkawai Forest Exploration Centre, particularly in the secondary forest and dense shrub along the loop trail to Cheptui Falls. Here, birders may encounter the African Goshawk, Chubb’s Cisticola, White-chinned Prinia, Moustached Tinkerbird, and African Blue Flycatcher, among others.

Some species have a very limited Ugandan range and can only be found in Mount Elgon, such as the Jackson’s Francolin and the Black-collared Apalis. Other rarities restricted to just a few mountains in eastern Uganda include the Black-shouldered Kite and the dazzling Tacazze Sunbird. The park is also one of the few places in Uganda where birders can witness the endangered Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), often seen soaring above the caldera and Suam Gorge.

Culture and Heritage.

Mount Elgon is not only a natural treasure but also a cultural icon. The Bagisu circumcision ritual (Imbalu)—one of the region’s most important cultural traditions—is intimately tied to the mountain. This public initiation ceremony, held every even-numbered year, marks the transition of young men into adulthood and draws large crowds of visitors from across Uganda and beyond.

UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve.

The ecological value of Mount Elgon is recognized globally. Its upper slopes are protected within national parks in both Uganda and Kenya, creating a transboundary conservation area. UNESCO has designated this region as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, underscoring its ecological importance and the need for long-term conservation of its unique biodiversity.

A Unique Trekking Destination.

Unlike many other mountains where reaching the summit is the ultimate prize, Mount Elgon offers a different kind of adventure. While Wagagai Peak (4,321m) is a highlight, the true marvel lies in exploring the vast 40 km² caldera—one of the largest intact volcanic craters in the world. This extraordinary geological feature, combined with waterfalls, caves, rich forests, and cultural encounters, makes trekking Mount Elgon an unforgettable experience.

Whether you are a birder, cultural explorer, or adventure seeker, Mount Elgon National Park offers something truly unique—an ancient volcano full of life, heritage, and spectacular landscapes.
