The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route”, is a classic and one of the most popular trails for climbing Kilimanjaro. At Mateys Wild Tours, we organize numerous expeditions along this route each year, starting with a trek through the lush tropical forest. The Machame route comes in two options: a 6-day and a 7-day itinerary, with the latter offering a much better acclimatization process and a higher summit success rate. Machame 7 is an excellent choice, even for beginners, as it provides stunning views throughout the journey. You’ll experience all five of Kilimanjaro’s climatic zones, climb the iconic Barranco Wall, and encounter the rare Dendrosenecio kilimanjari, a unique plant species that only grows on this mountain.
