Overview
Be careful when choosing between the 6- and 7-day Machame route itineraries. The 6-day variation has much lower summit success rates and is suitable only for experienced trekkers or travelers with prior acclimatization. This is because the shorter itinerary skips the intermediate stay at the Karanga Camp, making it much more challenging to adapt well to the high altitude and have a good chance at summiting. This option is often promoted by “budget” tour operators, but we don’t recommend it for beginners.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll be greeted by a representative from Mateys Wild Tours and transferred to your hotel. The hotel is well-equipped to ensure a pleasant stay, offering comfortable rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Depending on your arrival time, a briefing will be scheduled with our mountain guide in the afternoon or evening, who will also ensure you are fully prepared for the climb.
For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group. Please note that additional individual transfers will incur extra charges. We recommend coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times to avoid additional costs.
Meals: Dinner
Accommodations: Weru Weru River Lodge.
In the morning, your guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel for a brief orientation. Following this, you’ll be driven to the Machame Gate, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Once there, the necessary formalities, including obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, will be completed. The group will then begin the trek to Machame Camp. The trail winds through the lush rainforest, where tropical rain showers are common. It’s advisable to bring a raincoat and a set of dry clothes for this section of the journey.

The trail itself isn’t overly challenging, but the change in altitude may become noticeable, so it’s crucial to listen to your body and maintain a steady, comfortable pace. Upon reaching the camp, you’ll enjoy lunch and have some time to rest. Later, the group will take an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp, ascending 400 m /1,312 ft. Afterward, you’ll return to Shira Camp for a hot dinner.

This part of the trek involves several ascents and descents, culminating in a camp situated at an elevation above 4,600 m / 15,088 ft. The trek can be challenging, and some discomfort is common, but spending at least 1–2 hours here is crucial for proper acclimatization. Therefore, our groups enjoy a lunch break at Lava Tower.
Following lunch, you will descend to Barranco Camp. Here, you’ll be greeted by the impressive Barranco Wall, notable for its enormous size and steep incline. While you’ll be climbing it the following day, there’s no need to worry—there’s a straightforward hiking route that makes the ascent manageable.

No need to worry—our guides are skilled at setting a comfortable pace for everyone. Upon reaching the camp, you’ll be served a warm lunch. After a brief rest, you’ll continue your journey to Barafu Camp, where a hot dinner will be provided.
