Overview
The 6-day Lemosho route offers a challenging yet rewarding trek for experienced hikers or those with prior acclimatization experience. Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro, this route takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to scenic moorlands, providing stunning views of the mountain. While shorter than the traditional 8 to 7-day option, the 6-day itinerary requires a faster pace, making it more physically demanding. However, for those seeking a shorter trek with fewer days on the mountain, the Lemosho 6-day route offers a unique and exhilarating journey to the summit of Africa’s highest peak.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll be greeted by a representative from Mateys Wild Tours and transferred to your hotel. The hotel is well-equipped to ensure a pleasant stay, offering comfortable rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Depending on your arrival time, a briefing will be scheduled with our mountain guide in the afternoon or evening, who will also ensure you are fully prepared for the climb.
For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group. Please note that additional individual transfers will incur extra charges. We recommend coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times to avoid additional costs.
Meals: Dinner
Accommodations: Salinero Kilimanjaro Hotel.
A guide and the mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel before heading to Kilimanjaro National Park’s Londorossi Gate, located at the western entrance. The journey takes about 3–4 hours by vehicle. Once there, you’ll quickly handle the formalities of getting your climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue team. Afterward, the group will continue up the mountain in off-road vehicles, ascending to the drop-off point at 3,610 meters (11,841 feet), where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau.
From the drop-off point, you’ll begin the hike to your first high-altitude camp, Shira 2. This part of the trek involves a manageable increase in altitude and provides an excellent opportunity to start acclimatizing. When you reach the camp, the mountain crew will have already set up your tents and started preparing dinner, ensuring everything is ready for your arrival.

Spending 1–2 hours here helps your body adjust to the higher altitude, even though some discomfort is common at this elevation.
Following your break, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,900 m), where you’ll be greeted by the imposing sight of the Barranco Wall. Despite its steep and intimidating appearance, the path you’ll take the next day is straightforward and manageable.

Upon reaching the camp, a warm lunch will be served. Afterward, you’ll undertake an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp, gaining 200 meters (656 feet) in altitude before returning to Karanga Camp.

It’s advisable to use the rest of the day for recuperation. Spending time resting and sleeping at Barafu Summit Camp will help you conserve energy for the challenging night summit.
