Overview
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola route,” is the oldest and one of the most favored paths up Mount Kilimanjaro. By choosing this route, you’ll retrace the steps of Hans Meyer, who made the first successful summit of Kilimanjaro in 1889. This trail runs through Kilimanjaro National Park, crossing all of the mountain’s diverse climatic zones, from lush tropical forests to the barren alpine desert. Notably, it is the only route that provides dormitory-style huts for overnight stays.
If you’re thinking about the Marangu Route, it’s an excellent option for climbing Kilimanjaro during the rainy seasons—mid-March to late May and from late October to late December—since the huts offer a dry and comfortable shelter. The route is available in 5-day and 6-day itineraries, with the latter being less strenuous.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a Mateys Wild Tours representative will welcome you and arrange your transfer to the hotel as part of your package. The hotel is equipped to ensure a pleasant stay, offering comfortable rooms, hot showers, courteous service, a swimming pool, and Wi-Fi access. Later in the evening, you will meet with our team for a briefing, during which we will confirm that everything is for your upcoming climb.
Private tours include shared group airport transfers. Additional charges may apply for separate individual transfers, so we recommend coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times to minimize extra costs.
Meals: Dinner
Accommodations: Panama Garden Resort.
In the morning, your guide and mountain support crew will arrive at the hotel to meet you and provide a brief orientation. Following this, you’ll travel by vehicle to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, known as Marangu Gate (1,860 m/6,102 ft). After completing the necessary formalities, such as obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will begin the trek toward Mandara Hut (2,720 m/8,922 ft). The trail passes through lush rainforest, where tropical showers are common, so we recommend bringing rain gear and extra clothing. Upon reaching the camp, the support crew will handle all camp logistics and prepare lunch.
Along the Marangu route, you will stay overnight in designated huts, offering a comfortable alternative to tent camping.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
The group will begin the day with an early, hearty breakfast before setting off from Mandara Hut. The hike will lead to the second high-altitude camp: Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,202 ft). Upon arrival, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi, two majestic volcanoes.
After lunch and some rest, you’ll embark on an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut, ascending 200 m / 656 ft in elevation. Following this, you will return to Horombo Hut, where a warm dinner will be waiting for you.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
On this day, following breakfast, the group will continue trekking towards Kibo Hut (4,720 m / 15,482 ft). The hike itself is manageable, but it’s important to maintain a steady pace to conserve energy for the final ascent to Kilimanjaro’s summit. Upon arriving at the camp, lunch will be provided. Afterward, it’s advised to rest as much as possible, avoid any exertion, and stay well-hydrated.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Your group will set off at night from Kibo Hut (4,720 m /15,482 ft) to begin the climb to Kilimanjaro’s summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 ft). While the route itself is not technically difficult, the high altitude adds a significant challenge, making even simple movements feel demanding. Throughout the summit trek, each pair of climbers will have a guide, who will closely monitor their physical endurance and mental determination. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you will have the option to descend to the nearest glacier. Following the summit, you will return to Kibo Camp for a two-hour rest before proceeding down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m /12,202 ft).
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
In the morning, a warm breakfast will be served. Afterward, we’ll make our way to the Kilimanjaro National Park exit at Marangu Gate (1,970 m / 6,462 ft). Once you’ve completed your descent, the group will come together for a celebratory moment. You’ll also have the opportunity to share your thoughts about the journey in the guestbook. To conclude, we’ll present you with your well-earned certificates and arrange your transfer back to the hotel.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

After a restful stay at the hotel, you’ll be transferred back to the airport. Our team will ensure a smooth and timely departure process.
Please note that shared airport transfers are included for private tour packages. For additional individual transfers, extra charges will apply. To avoid these extra costs, we recommend coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times.
